A Beginner's Guide To Steeping E-Liquids
Although there is an impressive range of e-liquid flavors out there to try and experiment with, for vapers who are keen to get even more out of their vape, steeping their e-juice could be the best way to improve its flavor.
Why Steep E-Liquids?
One of the main reasons why vapers steep their e-liquids is because it can enhance the flavor. Compare the process to allowing an excellent wine to age. The aging process in wine enables more character and depth out of the taste. Steeping works by allowing oxidation of the compounds to thus promoting a more vibrant and robust flavor. A very beneficial process if you've bought an e-juice that doesn't quite hit the spot for you. It's always worth steeping an e-liquid that you don't enjoy just to see if it can be changed for the better by the process.
What Is Steeping?
There are several modes of steeping from the basic – allowing the bottle to remain in a cupboard for a few days – to the complex – using an ultrasonic cleaner.
The primary forms of steeping are:
Let's take a look at these more closely.
This is a simple and cheap method of steeping e-juices which involves putting the e-liquid bottle into a warm bath of water to encourage the molecules to mix more rapidly. One way to do this is to put the bottle up to the neck into a bowl of hot tap water with its lid removed until the water is cool. Place the top back on, give it a good shake, and you're ready to vape.
This method is fast but requires an investment in an ultrasonic cleaner. This sends energy pulses through the e-liquid which speeds up the process of steeping.
This is as simple as it sounds – simply shaking the bottle to encourage any separated particles to mix.
Another simple method, but the most time consuming involves leaving the e-juice in a cupboard for a period of time. Every day, shake the bottle thoroughly, then remove its lid and squeeze the bottle gently so that fresh air can be drawn into the bottle. Try steeping the liquid for one week and then sampling it. If it still hasn't reached optimal flavor, try leaving it for another week. If, after five weeks the flavor still isn't to your taste, it probably won't get any better, and it's best to try a different one.
Storing Your E-Juice
However you steep your e-juice, it's essential to store it properly to prevent it being affected by heat and light. Always keep your e-liquids in a dark cupboard or other space away from sunlight for best results.
Although you don't have to steep all e-juices to enjoy their flavor, it can be useful if you aren't particularly impressed by the taste of an e-liquid you have bought. It's also a tried and tested way of getting more flavor out of your vape. Experimentation is often the key to successful steeping, so try the methods suggested here and see if it makes a difference for you.
